Abrasion resistance and toughness are two important properties in assessing the efficiency of cutting tool materials. Abrasion resistance is primarily a function of hardness, and in this respect, diamond and cubic boron nitride are superior to all other known materials. The wear characteristics of these materials are unequaled. Furthermore, they possess high thermal conductivity and low coefficient of thermal expansion, which results in superior performance.
